Knit Stitch

I just started knitting (literally, I started for the first time yesterday) and I seem to be having some trouble.

First, I had trouble with casting on, it seemed to have resolved because I'm doing it in an oversimplified manner. I found that when I followed the video from knittinghelp.com for the long tail cast-on, I had too many stitches on my needle. Where the demonstrator had one, I had three or four. What could I be doing wrong?

But now my major problem is with the knit stitch. I find that when I'm doing the knit stitch, when I pull the thread off the left needle, there's too much yarn left between the two needles, I'm able to pull it taut but then I have a ton of yarn left hanging off the piece after I am done the first row.
Please help, I'm going a bit crazy!

Lessons learned

Lesson learned in Sociology: Whenever somebody starts a sentence with "I don't mean to sound prejudiced or anything but...," the rest of the sentence will be incredibly strange. For example, "I don't wanna sound prejudiced or anything but I think we'll become numb to gays. I mean, we can stand black people now can't we?" were words I heard from across the room while I silently seethed.

Lesson learned outside my house: I am much more frightened of snakes than I had previously assumed.

Lesson learned throughout CNN's election coverage: Four hours of Wolf Blitzer and gang is 3 and a half too many!

It's tremendously annoying when somebody pays you a compliment that might mean nothing to them but cheers you up ridiculously. Mostly because you're madly falling for them and they can't be bothered to freaking notice.

Conclusion: Boys are stupid.

Secondly, I'm so hopeful for the November elections. Please, America, don't break my heart again.

Thirdly, for all my posturing about changing the world and helping in Africa, I would be perfectly satisfied if I got none of that. If I just lived by the sea and could fall asleep every night next to the waves and an interesting person. I think I'm selfish. Or maybe just a teenage girl.

So, if any of the Robin Hood fic writers on my f'list are ridiculous like me and want to undertake things that they have no time for:

It looks like tons of fun and they have weekly prompts, so if you need a little inspiration..

Fic: In this valley of dying stars.

Title: In this valley of dying stars
Rating: PG
Characters: Rose/Doctor, mentions of Mickey, Jackie, Pete and Jack.
Summary: Rose and the Bad Wolf make their way across the universe after Doomsday.
A/N: Spoilers for Doomsday, which if you're not already spoiled for--go and spoil yourself, All Disclaimers ever invented apply here because, honestly, if I owned the Doctor and Rose, none of us would have any free time. Any lines you recognize most definitely do not come from me. The title comes from a T.S. Eliot poem, The Hollow Men. A lot of credit goes to [info]imaginary_iby whose fic, An Unknown Consequence, I was sort of inadvertently inspired by  as it is one of my favorite Rose stories ever written.

So, I'm in a...mood and I'm searching for a certain type of Doctor Who fic. Angst, beautiful, well-written angst. Or perhaps heart-stopping, gut-wrenching, make me sob angst. I need some catharsis.

Step 1. Put your playlist on random.
Step 2. Post the first line from the first 25 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing. (You can skip songs that are instrumental.)
Step 3. Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.

I am so pumped! I just got a new cat, first pet ever! My mother has finally acquiesced to my begging.

Now, if we can just convince her that her new comfy bed is more exciting than the bottom of our recliner.
